Can't see any louvred roofs, but then most of the roof structures are missing.
The presence of a chimney doesn't mean it's a gas works, just confirms some sort of combustion process, although this in itself is potentially contaminative.
Suggest you contact Russell Thomas from Parsons Brinkerhoff. His knowledge of the type and location of former gas works is extensive. He also holds some rare reference sources!
Have you referred to historic maps from the period and the National Archive - Access to Archives site on the web?
Kind regards

Subject: Old Photographs - Looking for clues over identity and purpose of building
Afternoon Everyone,
I was browsing through some old records and I found a selection of old black and white photographs of a former building and I began to wonder if I was looking at the site of a former gas works? The reason I am suggesting this is based on the architecture of the building with its chimney and the shape of the windows of what remains of the buildings including some of the more unusual openings.
However, I do accept that I might be barking up the wrong tree since there is no identifying features to try and place it in a proper setting in the district.
The site I am thinking about did close around about the 1960's 70's which would tie in with the cars in one of the pictures and was then reused for as a garage type business and going by the condition of the site, it would not be a surprise for Envi Health to be looking at, hence the photographs.
Any suggestions would be welcome, as its a bit of a mystery and whilst I have some other photographs of this area, I think these four show what I would consider to be the key features and I am just trying to find out if my hunch might be right.
Regards
