I remember debating with Jude (in 2004?) when her attitude was formative use was a bad idea; exemplified in her plagiarism book at the time. Funny how things change.
Can I just clarify, though, that formative use should not necessarily mean granting student access to Turnitin reports. Personally, I put drafts through TI and sit down with them to identify weaknesses in referencing. Given that many lecturers struggle with originality reports, it's a lot to ask students to understand them.
