In the Hans Christian Andersen story, the emperor bought "cloth" that we know to be fictional. That is not the case with scientific knowledge. Any bit of scientific knowledge may or may not later be shown to be false. If we are to transcend current assumptions, we must assume both that current science is right on any given assumption and that it is wrong. Therefor, science is unlike the ruler of the Andersen story. The emperor is simultaneously naked and wearing the hippest clothing in existence. Science is not a vain tyrant. It is Schrödinger's cool cat.
