Dear List members,
I am seeking evidence or studies of the benefits of research engagement for design practice.
Specifically, I'm interested in studies or cases that provide empirical evidence of the benefits of practitioners reading research literature or conducting research to support professional practice. While my focus is communication design, examples from other design specialisms would be equally appreciated.
In other fields, arguments for the benefits of research for practice are supported by studies that show, for example, that evidence-based practice improves the outcomes of medical practice, education, etc.
I have found literature that argues for - and against - the merits of research as a method or tool within design practice, but all of the arguments appear to be based on theory, logic, or reason. If reading and conducting research really are effective or ineffective for supporting or improving professional practice, there should be empirical evidence to support this.
Please let me know of any references you can suggest.
Thank you for your consideration,
Emma
