I will need some more people; I can’t bake all the cakes myself and source the ingredients so I will need someone to travel around to see local suppliers plus I think I will need a tea specialist too and maybe an interior designer…..so that’s 2 Pub Managers, Tea Lady, say 2 more Drivers, Procurement Officer, oooh a Cleaner, Handyman, someone to help with icing the cakes so that’s jobs for 9 more people…..oh and someone to do the Marketing….that makes 10…oh and an accountant so that’s 11

Ahhhh retirement if only I could retire at 47 I'd be a happy rabbit...
I have come up with a plan...
We will move to Cornwall or Devon or Dorset and open a Tea Shop by the seaside. My husband can then drive a mini-bus around and pick up groups of people for a day trip bring them to the shop for breakfast, then drive them around then bring them back to the tea shop for afternoon tea & cakes then take them home again ..sounds ideal to me ☺

I have the same issue with FS and have one FT Exams Officer who does nothing else. We run both online and paper-based via Edexcel and it's just a constant stream of exams and associated admin. He's also supposed to process all our WBL framework claims too, but often doesn't really have time, nor do my other EO's, so it's usually down to me to sort them out.
I have the option of retirement in October 2014 and it's becoming more and more attractive!

I can empathise with you whole heartedly. I seriously think they do not have a clue what we do and the pressures we face and how the smallest thing can turn into a catastrophe and cost £000's if we don't do things properly.
I was told in no uncertain terms on Friday to "put up and shut up".
It was suggested Exams should stay in the evening for the duration of all exams to the bitter end or in fact we should invigilate them ourselves so if there were issues we could fix them, so now we have to work 8am to 9pm as and when required..I think not. I do have a life !!!
Needless to say I am more than unhappy and seriously looking for somewhere else to work. It's a hard enough job to do without this sort of, excuse me, crap being dumped at our door.
One of my Administrators has spent all this academic year just doing FS so I've had to do her other work as she literally has no time to do anything else as the Curriculum decided how FS were to be run this year and it hasn't worked. We were given no choice in the matter. They have booked re-sit session after re-sit session and they are still ongoing.
Why don't they spend a week in Exams doing what we do. I'd give them 2 hours max before they gave up having to put up with all the interruptions, emails, phone calls, last minute changes etc.

Good Morning
I thought I would share with you what has happened over a period of time to the Exams Department here.
Three years ago the department was made up of myself, a full time exams assistant, a part time 20 hours per week term time only Functional skills exams assistant and also a regular invigilator who came in whenever needed to deal with online exams. This has now been whittled down to myself and 1 full time assistant, we have now been told that due to not having the January A Levels the exams assistant post has been cut to 0.5 and to make up for this shortfall in her workload a new post has been created which basically is the job she is already doing with the addition of dealing with various other tasks that were previously done by a member of the IS team.
Fed up doesn't really cover it..
I have made it very clear that I will continue to do my job on a day to day basis but there is no chance of me ever being able to plan for the future or to look to improve the exams department in any way.
