Hello Rebecca,
It could be interesting to take a look at Health Policy and Systems Research - A Methodology Reader (www.who.int/alliance-hpsr/resources/reader/en/). This Reader aims to support the development of the field of HPSR, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries.
It is actually an attempt to define the field of health policy and systems research, and the Introduction chapter sets out to do exactly that. The rest of the hefty book introduces and presents a number of papers that are considered exemplary in terms of methodology, including RE even if just by 1 paper ;).
Have a nice weekend,
-bruno

Subject: The Realist Hive - invitation to participate.
Hi Ramesesians,
My colleague Mark Pearson and I keep a blog on the University of Exeter website on our experiences and reflections of using realist methods. http://blogs.exeter.ac.uk/realisthive/<file:///\\isad.isadroot.ex.ac.uk\uoe\User\.netbeans>
We’d like to open up the blogging to anyone in the RAMESES community that wants a space to reflect and share their own experiences and opinions, advice or whatever. So if you’re interested in contributing a guest post to the blog, then do get in touch... we’d be honoured to have your input.
The other thing is I need your help in defining Health Services Research (I realise not all of you are HSRers, but you may still have your own interesting definitions of what HSR is!!)
Thing is, I recently linked the Hive Blog to my Facebook page, in the hope that my friends might better understand what it is I do all day…. And unsurprisingly, they were a bit ‘eh?!?’, saying they didn’t really understand what health services research was (let alone realist methods!!).
So. I am going to do a post called ‘Health Services Research 101’, to explain some of the terminology, rationales and approaches, and I’d like to include some definitions from the RAMESES community to illustrate it.
So, in a sentence…. what is health services research? What does it mean to you? Why do you do it? What difference can it make?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Many thanks,
Becky.
