Dear Terry,
I found this quoted section to be a useful point of entry, for me, into
your paper:
"This introduction of the study of discontinuities contrasts with the
general thrust of assumptions about design, which has more typically
assumed factors as being smoothly continuous. Differences in aspects of
design are considered a matter only of degree and scope. For example, in
continuums between easy and difficult, artistic and scientific, coarse and
fine, valuable and not valuable, ephemeral and timeless, light and dark,
soft and hard, and from single design to multi-participant teams or
collaborations, and single discipline to multidiscipline etc.² (Love)
What I then went looking for was some account of ³indeterminacy² and
³contingency². Why? Because these concepts have been part of the design
discourse over the years as fundamental disruptive insights - which is how
I see your use of ³discontinuity².
How do you see these other concepts aligned with ³discontinuity²?
Cheers
keith
