Well, bilateral activation pattens are actually very common. Think of some visuospatial task, it might result in activations in left and right IPS, insular cortex, SMA, frontal eye fields for example.
If the results are completely unexpected you should make sure that none of the subjects' data sets were flipped accidentally.
