Just to clarify: Modes Complete is the current product, and has been
for some years now. The MUA would encourage any Modes for Windows users
to upgrade to Complete.
> However, i have to state the obvious and say that there are other products on the market that offer more capability. MODES is great but does not have some of the other options that other leading CMS do, Digital Asset Management, Digital Rights Management to name but 2.
The appearance on the scene of a requirement for DAMS support is
relatively recent, and ties in with the Collections Trust DAMS Partner
initiative. Our intention is to develop simple but effective support
for digital asset management, in a way which complies with the DAMS
Partner criteria and is appropriate for the requirements of Modes
users. This would include dynamic resizing of images on delivery, and
injection of rights and other metadata according to IPTC guidelines.
(Also, this support will form part of the Modes package, rather than
being a separately costed add-on, and will use Modes data natively
rather having to interface two separate systems.)
> As for MODES Marrying well with our website. it does not. any image / file that exists within MODES, is actually a linked file that resides on the hard drive / server. you can however, at an additional cost, have the MODES User Association, host your MODES and serve this back to you via a Web interface.
The strategy chosen for storing images and web delivery of museum data
are two separate issues. Having images "inside" a Modes data file/DAMS
wouldn't make it any easier to serve them to the Web.
The MUA is currently developing a Wordpress plugin which will allow
Modes users to publish their collections on Wordpress-based sites, using
standard "shortcodes". These sites can be hosted by the museum or, as
you say, by the MUA. MUA-based web hosting offers the additional
benefit of acting as an off-site backup for your data.
I'm happy to provide more detail off-list.
