They have no choice. The government push is to reduce the number of students taking several sittings of GCSEs (breaking the resit culture) and 1 of the tactics for this is to only allow "first entries" in the Summer series. This coupled with the plan that learners cannot take their exam before year 11 means that school age learners will be restricted to taking their first sitting at the end of year 11 (which I must say I agree with).
With regards using other awarding bodies to the ones originally sat at school, this would not be possible for English anyway as there is a controlled assessment in English and there is no provision to transfer credit within GCSE (as far as I am aware).

We have previously entered all our newly-enrolled GCSE Maths students for Edexcel linear in November, regardless of their previous AO. I would suspect that few of the AOs would reject 'business' by checking their records to see if all these thousands of students previously took 'their' spec!
Would they rely on the Exams community to do their policing for them?

Hi All
According to a leaflet about GCSE examination changes from AQA I have kept (do not know when it came out), ' From 2014, the November series will be restricted to students wishing to re-take a subject where a results has already been awarded in a previous series. The subject award entry must be identical to that awarded previously.' So I am afraid you have to enter them for the correct cash-in with different boards. We always used to this but the last couple of years for Maths we just gave them linear AQA. No more I am afraid.
Kind regards

Hi Dawn,
Whilst we do not offer Edexcel Maths and English, we do have similar instances where students with us who want to re-sit will do so with the original AB they sat at school, even if it differs from that which we offer (AQA Maths and WJEC English). A little bit of juggling with different papers (and sometimes length of exam) on exam day, but it all goes ok.

We are thinking of offering a resit in GCSE English and Maths with Edexcel for 16-18 students coming to us from schools where they could have studied with a variety of awarding bodies and would like to know what other colleges do in this case. Do your colleges think the specs are very much the same and still offer it even though they haven't studied the spec you deliver.
Many thanks
Dawn
