We're on a bit of a different path at the Horniman.
When I started in 10/11, we were approx 1:3 (web: physical). In 11/12, that closed to 1:1.7 (web: physical) and further closed in 12/13 to 1:1.6.
In 13/14 so far, we're almost on an even 1:1 between web and physical. (Our physical visits have increased, but our web visits have more than doubled over the past few years.)
FYI: Our physical visits are a combination of visits to the museum and the gardens.
Pretty sure all this data is available publicly, so feel free to use as you wish.
For completion, our biggest spikes come from a combination of PR (live-blogging the move a one-ton walrus, for instance) or when we get featured on other websites (like the time we randomly appeared on Yahoo Mexico's homepage).

ours is typically between 5:1 and 6:1 (web:physical respectively) spikes in physical visits tend to be about exhibitions and these gain spikes in web traffic, but the spikes follow marketing activity as one might expect (and hope!) so the web visit traffic and the physical visit traffic may not be directly at the same, but over an exhibition and its campaign generally reflect the popularity of an exhibition.

Subject: Help: web visits/footfall
A very happy new year to all MCGers and a first favour-request of
2014...
I'm currently looking at the relationship between physical visitors to
our building and our online visitors (numerically in the first place)
and trying to get a sense of whether the relationship between the two
(roughly 2:1 web:irl) and trends (higher online visitor figures follow
the peaks & troughs of physical visits driven by temporary exhibitions)
is typical of other museums and cultural venues.
So I wonder whether any of you might be able to share with me two
related pieces of information:
* The number of GA-measured web visits for a year-long period as
close to the year 1 Oct 2012 - 30 Sep 2013 as possible
* The number of physical visits to your venue(s) for the same time
period
This is in reasonable confidence: the data will be shared internally
with a small number of senior colleagues; please reply off-list & I
won't summarise for the list.
If I'm being thick & there there's a forum where anything like this is
shared, please do slap my wrist and point me there. I've looked at
Museum Analytics
(www.museum-analytics.org<http://www.museum-analytics.org>) but
the data there seems to be a couple of years out of date
Thanks in advance for your kind and generous help.

Subject: Re: Help: web visits/footfall
Hi Danny, Happy New Year to you too.
I'd be happy to give you Kew's ... if I was still there! We did do
some
similar analysis but there were just so many variables at play,
especially
as an outdoor attarction the weather, but also school holidays, news
stories, festivals etc. So I suspect to get any real value in this
you'd
have to consider the granularity of the data, particularly with respect
to
timeframe (daily stats, and day of week) and potentially drill down
into
specific areas of the respective sites.
In terms of a place where this might already exist, the one thing that
springs to mind is Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) -
http://www.alva.org.uk - but they exist to share benchmarking data
amongst
their members so I think you'd have to join I'm afraid.
Cheers
James
