Hi Ivan,
I think we might have what you're looking for.
To address exactly the issues you mention, InfoAktiv was developed as a
standardised platform to address 80% of requirements for in-gallery
interactives.
It's a fully-supported proven software package, rather than a one-off; so
users have been able to upgrade what they have over the years to take
advantage of new technology, rather than having something that stagnates.
This upgrade path makes it more valuable over time, not less.
It is remarkably easy for curators, volunteers and non-technical people to
set up, making it very cost-effective, flexible and easy to keep fresh.
It takes a very open and pragmatic approach, using standard hardware, tools
and file types wherever possible. Customers don't have to learn a lot of new
skills or reinvent any wheels.
Frequently the software can be installed on existing hardware and run
existing content.
We would love to work with your team and collaborate, that is central to
what we do.
There is already an active collaborative user community of museums and
individuals making their work available on the 'InfoAktiv AppStore'.
- For example, users building a First World War display can find over 700
screens of ready-made content on the AppStore that they can use as building
blocks for their own interactives.
Many museums provide their work free, while others raise some money by
charging for what they produce.
Like you, we're convinced that a standardised enterprise approach is the
right one.
As with any other type of software, it's madness to commission something
bespoke if an off-the-shelf package does what you need.
Until now that just hasn't been a viable approach for most gallery
interactives.
I'll be delighted to let you take a look at the software or borrow a system
to try out.
If you want to try it on the public you should be able to create a display
in a few hours.
With best regards,
Dave.

Subject: [MCG] In-gallery technology evaluation
Hello all,
The NHM are currently looking at the future of our on-site digital
technology and we'd really appreciate any insights or thoughts the MCG may
have.
Please see summary below:
Thanks in advance!
Ivan
In-gallery technology evaluation
The NHM is looking to collaborate with other museums and/or specialist
consultants to review the current and expected future trends in the field of
in-gallery interactive technologies. We need to understand what
technologies other institutions are using and developing globally to meet
similar needs. The aim is to use the findings from these efforts to inform
the roadmap for in-gallery technology investment whilst supporting
opportunities to seek partnerships with technology providers. We would like
to know if you are interested in collaborating on these efforts and/ or have
any suggestions of consultants who may be well placed to work with us on
this.
Where we are
To date the NHM has adopted a gallery-by-gallery, project-by-project
approach to choosing technology solutions. The outcome of this approach
often produces a highly customised solution using the most appropriate
technology available at the time. In-gallery technology is often only
updated when a physical gallery is refreshed, the challenge being that the
lifespan of the technology is usually far shorter than that of the exhibit
and needs to be refreshed periodically. Even using the same content on new
technology provides its own challenge. This approach has led to a legacy of
disparate systems using many different technologies, creating complexities
in both the support and future development and integration of in-gallery
systems.
Where we want to be
The NHM would like to standardise the hardware and software platform we use
for circa 80% of our in-gallery technology; essentially using an enterprise
approach to rolling out and maintaining the majority of our systems.
Ideally we would have a partnership with a technology provider to ensure we
have a secured level of support for our chosen technologies in the longer
term.
