medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
While on the subject of 19th C "mediaeval" sculptures in Paris, I have
always understood that the capital in the Conciergerie depicting the love of
Abelard & Heloise in four reliefs is 19th C. Part of the refurbishment of
the C in the 1850s. (I saw and photographed them in 2004!) However, someone
has challenged me on this saying the carvings are 14th century. (I have my
doubts!!) But can anyone point me to an authoritative source that would
clinch the argument ?

I don't doubt that there are medieval examples of pointed hats identifying
Jews, but the sculpture on the facade of Notre-Dame in Paris is mid-19th
century, carved by the restoration sculptor Geoffroy-Dechaume, if I'm not
mistaken.
