She acted of surprise. I could not think
but only stammer, I being amazed.
It was in my nature, like a deep wound.
I was hungry, being hunted, bleeding
inside a notional self I would preserve.
She was free; never quite fully charged;
but crept up, not willing to go, and grabbed
hold on one wall to begin to speak,
voice harsh, masquerading; and, in all things,
taking in others with whom I tried to laugh
though they were being watched by calm police –
*they* must have been collecting for a zoo,
all of us; and I saw her, unconcerned
while she sought to be loved, taken over.
