Doctoral Studentships at the Royal College of Music, London

The Royal College of Music invites applications from all nationalities for a three-year doctoral studentship to undertake research relating to the RCM's Special Collections, to start in September 2014. The successful candidate's proposal will reflect the RCM's research priorities, as detailed on the Research pages (http://www.rcm.ac.uk/research/), particularly the strand concerned with understanding music's contexts (http://www.rcm.ac.uk/research/people/understandingmusicscontexts/).

Possible areas in which proposals are welcome include:

Concert life in London 1770-1970, which might make reference to the collection of historical musical instruments, iconographic collections, treatises, programmes, personal and institutional archives, correspondence, manuscripts and printed editions at the RCM.

British instrument-making 1750-1900, which might make reference to the collection of historical musical instruments, business archives, trade directories and manufacturers catalogues; the Heron Allen collection (research files relating to the history of the violin) and historical treatises.

The successful proposal will draw creatively on the materials held in the RCM Special Collections and offer innovative suggestions regarding future dissemination of the research.

This studentship covers 75% of student fees and will be available for three years. Subject to availability, there is a possibility of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship to help cover the remainder of the fees after transferring to full doctoral registration.

Candidates should have a first class honours degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant discipline.
