With apologies for cross-posting
For those interested in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research, we are pleased to advertise the following HEA-funded workshop:
'Teaching Popular Cultures in a Modern Languages Context: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue'
University of Hull
January 27th 2014
This workshop brings together teachers of popular cultures within modern languages (MFL) and beyond, in order to explore various pedagogical approaches to this area. We will establish examples of best practice from across the disciplines, by fostering dialogue with representatives from areas such as Music, Drama, Film, and Media Studies.
The workshop will take the form of four roundtable/discussion groups with associated small group activities and discussions on the following topics: ‘what are ‘popular cultures’ according to our students and why should we study them?’; ‘examples of teaching popular cultures’; ‘trouble-shooting and problem-solving: addressing the challenges of teaching popular cultures’; ‘going beyond – popular cultures, modern languages and future collaborations’.
Our aim is to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue between MFL and other arts and humanities disciplines, which will help to better prepare MFL teachers to teach popular cultures by providing them with examples of good practice from across the disciplines and exploring potential instances of collaboration in learning and teaching initiatives, and research.
