Dear all,
This is an early announcement of a Ph.D. position in Geodynamics at the University of Helsinki. Students with an interest in geodynamics and numerical modeling are sought for a three-year fully funded project titled "What controls strain partitioning at obliquely convergent ocean-continent margins? 3D dynamics of crustal deformation along the western Andean margin" lead by David Whipp, Dept. of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki, Finland. The project involves development of fully 3D thermal and mechanical numerical models of the western margin of the northern Andes to explore the relative influences of subduction dip angle, arc volcanism and plate convergence obliquity on strain partitioning in the western Andean crust north and south of the Talara Bend, Peru. Numerical experiments will be performed using the new 3D thermomechanical geodynamic numerical modeling code DOUAR on high-performance computing clusters in Finland and abroad. The project also involves a visit to Dalhousie University, Canada to collaborate with the Dalhousie Geodynamics Group lead by Chris Beaumont. With an emphasis on numerical modeling, this project is ideally suited for students with a strong quantitative background in geology, physics, or a related field. You can find some additional information at https://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/HUGG/Opportunities.
Interested students are asked to send a C.V. and any questions to Asst. Prof. David Whipp ([log in to unmask]). I will be attending the AGU Fall Meeting Dec. 9-13 and would be very happy to meet to discuss the project, life in Helsinki, etc. The project is tentatively scheduled to start in the spring of 2014, but the start date has some flexibility. The main requirement is that you must have completed a Masters degree in geology, geophysics or a related field prior to the start of the project. An official announcement will follow in early 2014.
Cheers,
Dave
