Animation at the Cutting Edge: An Alphaville Symposium
University College Cork, Ireland
15 February 2014
http://animationcuttingedge.wordpress.com/
“Animation at the Cutting Edge” aims to be methodologically interdisciplinary, to explore animation that is in the vanguard of its field, and to present scholarship that stretches the boundaries of research on film form, aesthetics, narrative, technology, industry, genre and medium. Animation is naturally and constitutively experimental; this symposium will examine animation that is at the cutting edge, as well as think about animation in ways that are novel, imaginative and transdisciplinary.
Yuanyuan Chen (University College Cork) on contemporary Chinese women animators
Cristina Formenti (Universita’ Statale, Milan) on redundancy and fictionality in animated mockumentaries
Helen Haswell (Queen’s University Belfast) on Pixar’s hand-drawn aesthetics and affection for the past
Lilly Husbands (King’s College London) on childhood amnesia in Jeff Scher’s You Won’t Remember This
Danijela Kulezic-Wilson (University College Cork) on narrative liminality and musical sensuality in Waking Life
Paul Ward (Arts University Bournemouth) on animation as atavistic magic
Paul Wells (Loughborough University) on industrial animation
Alphaville offers a dynamic international forum open to the discussion of all aspects of film and screen media history, theory and criticism through multiple research methodologies and perspectives. It cultivates inspiring research, and seeks work that displays a clear engagement with current debates and methodological issues.
