I agree to a certain extent. I think it's even more apparent in Anvil (Gervasi, 2008) a film that, like Sugarman, does its subject a disservice through factual/biographical omission in favour of a familiar narrative. This narrative is familiar to audiences from music biopics, rescue from obscurity films and in the case of Anvil it is essentially the same narrative as This is Spinal Tap (Reiner, 1984).
There seems to be an increasing move towards fulfilling familiar narrative demands in rockumentary at the expense of the individual needs of the subject.
