Dear Sunil and the list
The event titled Deconstruction Design Education was stimulating with numerous 8 minute presentations by IIT professors and the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources Development) The Minister MHRD, Pallam Raju and Sam Pitroda from the Planning Commission spoke of taking a new look at design in the Indian higher education system and this may be a first for us here. I hope this interest is sustained since many heads of technology schools as well as management schools were present at the meeting. All this will be available online as YouTube videos and I will share this link as soon as it is uploaded by the Ministry officials. I believe India will need global expertise and participation in strengthening its design education infrastructure particularly since there has been a lag in investments for design when compared to technology, science and management over the past several decades.
This may be happening now, I hope, and that makes all these meetings particularly exciting for me. Yes, I have proposed a Ministry of Design but this is not within the purview of the MHRD agenda, however we do need to see how the subject can be handled at at the political level in the country especially for an area of work that is currently neglected by industry and Government alike, Design for Public Good. I wonder if we can use the experiences of other nations in this particular activity as the Government will be a huge partner and be the initiator and major investor in most developing and emerging nations. Global experiences here will be useful to see what kind of model can be proposed for the governance of such an initiative. I look forward to recommendations from the list which can be shared with the MHRD team. Which National Government has policies and governance systems that we in India can study for our fairly complex needs? I would love to learn more about the Governance systems adopted by nations to promote as well as manage the use of design for public good that is otherwise left to "market forces" and therefore left unattended by industry and business alike.
I hope to hear more from the list about programmes, publications and policies that we can study to take this initiative forward from here. I have obtained a copy of the Loraine Justice book on Design Revolution in China from the MIT design series edited by Ken Friedman and Eric Stolterman are there other books that we should look at? Also of interest would be country reports that can be shared with the officials the the MHRD as part of this initiative here in Indua.
With warm regards

For me it's a no brainer that we should call fro a Ministry of Design, simply because it needs its own mandate. Putting it under any other ministry will taint it with agendas detrimental to the larger cause. The question however, that remains is 'who will bell the cat?'
