Thanks Nigel
I think it would be a good thing for discussion at the meeting which is partly why I brought it up. I feel it needs to be something national like the Portable Ant Scheme so that is well monitored and high profile so that it is recognised and sustainable. Locally set up schemes run the risk of being forgotten and in many places there are not enough people with the knowledge. The loss of staff/knowledge even at the NHM and consequent lack of general networking despite the technology at our disposal seems to be leading to the stagnation of progress.
Cindy raises very valid points about trust etc. I certainly get that. I think in practice each area should have its own list but could be monitored and sponsored by a national initiative and linked together by being linked on the GCG Website. And sharing is needed of case studies of what works in practice in terms of setting one up, getting the work out, building up trust. I want to see one in my area but wouldn't know where to start and could see it running out of steam quite fast without the support of people like myself as WE ARE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES.
Best wishes
Phil

Subject: Re: NATIONAL FOSSIL RECORDING SCHEME?
Dear Philip,
There is a local scheme being implemented in Norfolk and one already running in Dorset (along the Jurassic Coast at least) and there may be others elsewhere.
Personally I think it would be a great idea, along the lines of the Portable Antiquites Scheme. But I doubt anyone has much time to do this in addition to their current workload. Fresh funding would have to be found. If you fancy a trip to Great Yarmouth this saturday there is a talk on the scheme in Norfolk as part of a Fossil Roadshow event, see the flier attached.
Perhaps this topic should be discussed at the GCG meeting in Canterbury on December 3rd & 4th? They are still looking for one or two speakers.
With best wishes, Nigel.
