Hi Rosie,
The Field Studies Council have some excellent guides on UK (broadly,
also N Atlantic) seaweed types and their ecology. The easiest way to
confirm an ID is however to visit a beach and collect some of the common
types yourself - esp. Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum! They
are also interesting to char once dried... I have found that both the
thallus ('stem') cross-sections and air-sacs are quite distinctive.
