Hi Rosie, The Field Studies Council have some excellent guides on UK (broadly, also N Atlantic) seaweed types and their ecology. The easiest way to confirm an ID is however to visit a beach and collect some of the common types yourself - esp. Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum! They are also interesting to char once dried... I have found that both the thallus ('stem') cross-sections and air-sacs are quite distinctive. http://www.field-studies-council.org/publications/pubs/common-seaweeds.aspx http://www.field-studies-council.org/publications/pubs/a-field-key-to-the-british-brown-seaweeds.aspx Best wishes, Rachel.
