medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Some not-episcopal Vitae:
1) Gordon Plumb's mention of the Vita of Gilbert of Sempringham got me thinking of another founder, Francis of Assisi (canonized in 1228). Volumes 1 and 2 of Regis J. Armstrong, J.A. Wayne Hellmann, and William J. Short, eds., _Francis of Assisi: Early Documents_ (NY: New City Press, 1999-2002) offers English-language versions of Thomas of Celano's _Legenda prima_ of Francis (1228-1229), of the latter's _Memoriale in desiderio animae_ (_Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul_ [1245-1247]; popularly known as Thomas' _Second Life_ of Francis), and other chronologically pertinent hagiographic material. Leah Shopkow's annotated updating of A. G. Ferrers Howell's earlier twentieth-century translation of Thomas' _Legenda prima_ is available online (as _The First Life of Saint Francis_) at <http://www.indiana.edu/~dmdhist/francis.htm>.
A recent, handy guide to the early material on Francis is William Hugo, _Studying the Life of Saint Francis of Assisi: A Beginner's Workbook_ (NY: New City Press, 2011).
2) The date of pseudo-Rabanus Maurus' double Vita of Sts. Mary Magdalene and Martha of Bethany (_Vita beatae Mariae Magdalenae et sororis eius sanctae Marthae_) is uncertain: it falls either slightly before the specified date range or squarely within it. There's an annotated English-language version by David Mycoff: _The Life of Saint Mary Magdalene and of her Sister Saint Martha: A Medieval Biography_ (Kalamazoo, MI: Cistercian Publications, 1989). NB: The Library of Congress, followed by innumerable libraries and booksellers using LC's cataloging, attributes this absurdly to Rabanus Maurus himself.
Best again,
John Dillon
