Dear Sir Andrew Dilnot,
Attack on health statistics.
At a time when Britain is increasing spending on surveillance because
of potential outside threats, it could be suicidal to cut our
surveillance of the British population’s health. This is because very
often such statistics are the only way to anticipate threats posed by
environment health impacts, which in the long run may be far greater
than any terrorist attack. Only by maintaining our existing standards
on health statistics can we ensure that we and future generations are
able to take appropriate action based on scientific evidence. Based
on past experience, it is inevitable that fresh challenges to health
will arise from changes in environmental conditions. Without
remaining statistically alert, our ignorance would make us very
vulnerable to such events. For example, an increase in genetic
deterioration in the population may not be detected. It should be
acknowledged that Britain is the leading nation in the collection of
comprehensive health statistics for a large sized population.
Abandoning this role would have important consequences, not only for
Britain, but for the world community as a whole.
Yours sincerely,
John Urquhart
