I was quite alarmed to read this posting! I think the intention is clearly to prevent waste and save NHS resource and so therefore laudable. However an unintended consequence could be that reagent lots are mixed and/or the products are incorrectly stored in transport which could potentially lead to erroneous results being generated. Individual reagent components are tested before release as meeting performance criteria used in combination. Equally, while highly unlikely that there will be any effect on the products through collection and transport, this cannot be guaranteed.
I would recommend that laboratories who do find themselves with excess unwanted reagents contact their original supplier.
