The development of new means of independent production has transformed the field of professional, academic and amateur design. A new generation of “makers” work on new innovation models using tools such as open source design, 3-D printing and rapid prototyping. On this basis the conference aims at an in-depth description and critical theoretical discussion on the developments of this "Maker Culture".
What are the current trends and drivers? Can DIY communities and maker cultures contribute to a more free and emancipated society? Are these discussions really just scraping on the surface of larger developments towards the totalization of capitalist markets?
Speakers are invited to submit theoretical, practical or experimental proposals from various fields of research. The conference will generally be held in German, unfortunately we are not able to provide translations. Still english speakers are very welcome. A publication of selected contributions will follow in 2014.
The German Society for Design Theory and Research (DGTF) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2003 to foster discussion, exchange and profiling of relevant design issues, mainly in German speaking contexts.
Apologies for cross posting.
