[*Blog Editor's note*: I'm gratified to see a journal as prestigious as JMD
finally recognize the significance of Bio-inspired design within

 --Fil Salustri]

Biologically-inspired design (BID) (or biomimicry) is an emerging research
area at the intersection of design, computer science and biology that seeks
to systematically mine biological knowledge to solve design problems. BID
research is active across many disciplines and has had important and
significant results. Of particular research interest to society is how can
we mine biology for solutions to problems for which we have no good
“engineered” solution (e.g., think of how Velcro changed the world as
a means of easy, reusable attachments – it was inspired by the common
cocklebur’s hooked spines that easily grab other objects). Consequently,
the Journal of Mechanical Design calls for submissions for a special issue
on Biologically-Inspired Design.

One decade of conferences (2004-2014): Time for celebration… in Brazil!

The Sixth International Conference on Concept Mapping follows on the
success of the first five Conferences held Pamplona, San José,
Tallinn/Helsinki, Viña del Mar, and Valletta in bringing together scholars
and practitioners interested in concept mapping. It is being organized by
the University of São Paulo and the Institute for Human and Machine
Cognition, USA.

The Conference is aimed at all persons interested in the use of concept
maps (based on the work of Dr. Joseph Novak), including, but not limited
to: facilitation of learning; eliciting, capturing, archiving, and using
“expert” knowledge; planning instruction; assessment of “deep”
understandings; research planning; collaborative knowledge modeling;
creation of “knowledge portfolios”; and administrative and strategic
planning and monitoring. We expect participants from a broad range of
fields presenting a wide variety of research and applications of concept
mapping.

All papers and proceedings from previous conferences are available at
http://cmc.ihmc.us.

More information will be posted at the CMC website: http://cmc.ihmc.us as
it becomes available.

This special issue of AIEDAM will be devoted to papers concerned with
Analogical Thinking.

Analogical thinking involves the use of analogies for a variety of tasks
such as

1) Generating novel concepts (design-by-analogy) and
2) Helping explain existing and new concepts

We welcome papers that report the study of analogies (and metaphors) not
only in design, but more generally in engineering, analysis, manufacturing,
as well as design education. We welcome work describing cognitive studies,
computational theories and interactive tools.

JULY 24, 2013

Dates: 9-11 July 2014
Location: Opatija, Croatia

Deadline for submission of abstracts: ASAP

The Design and Nature conference is to be reconvened in 2014 following the
success of previous meetings, the first of which was held in Udine, in
2002; followed by Rhodes, (2004); the New Forest, home of the Wessex
Institute of Technology (2006); the Algarve (2008); Pisa (2010) and La
Coruna (2012).

Scientists and engineers now have at their disposal a vast array of
relationships for materials, mechanisms and control. The resulting laws
have been painstakingly assembled by observation and analysis and span the
cosmic scale of space down to the molecular level of genetics. In
particular, they have made us aware of the rich diversity of the natural
world around us.

These developments have prompted the reconvening of the Design and Nature
Conference which attracts researchers from around the world working on a
variety of studies involving nature and their significance for modern
scientific thought and design. The success of the series is in great part
due to the interdisciplinary character of the conference, which brings
together a wide variety of specialists such as physical scientists,
engineers, biologists, medical experts as well as those involved in
humanities and arts.

Delegates attending Design and Nature 2014 will be invited to submit an
extended version of their paper for possible publication in the *International
Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics*, one of the Journals edited by
the Wessex Institute.

See the website for more information.

2013)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/aiedam-special-issue-design-of-complex-engineered-systems-sep-2013/>

JULY 24, 2013

Deadline for full papers: 16 September 2013
Guest Editors: Irem Y. Tumer & Kemper E. Lewis

Design of Complex Engineered Systems is a research area that focuses on
systematic and rigorous approaches to designing and analyzing large-scale
engineering systems. Complexity comes from the fact that these systems are
not only large-scale, but also include multiple disciplines, and are
composed of hardware, software, and at times humans, which typically
results in unmodelled and poorly understood interactions and behavior at
multiple scales. Such behavior often leads to unintended consequences that
plague engineering organizations developing such systems, including cost
overruns, schedule delays, unplanned maintenance, and ultimately,
catastrophic failures during operation. Current systems engineering
processes do not guarantee safe, effective, and robust systems that are
delivered on-time and within budget. Over the last 5 years, the engineering
design research community has recognized this problem and advances have
been made in many research groups with real large-scale applications.
Furthermore, government organizations including NSF, NASA, and DARPA have
created new programs that specifically fund the scientific approaches
needed to make a significant impact in the state-of-the-art. As a result,
this special issue is very timely in that many of the approaches are ready
to be disseminated and shared with our peers. The guest editors intend to
showcase the variety of the research in this field.

Call for Papers / Designs for the 2014 Fashion And Communication SYMPOSIUM
May 2-3, 2014, St. Paul,
Minnesota<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/call-for-papers-designs-for-the-2014-fashion-and-communication-symposium-may-2-3-2014-st-paul-minnesota/>

JULY 23, 2013

Fashion is change and because it is change, fashion impacts nearly every
aspect of our lives from the language we speak, the furniture we use, the
homes we live in, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the food we
eat. Fashion also reflects social consensus and to achieve consensus we
must have communication. Thus, for our third symposium we focus on
relationships between fashion and communication. We are interested in
providing opportunities to share research findings, innovative teaching
strategies, and designs that explore and investigate issues related to
communication and fashion.

The symposium has an inclusive definition of the term “fashion”. While
fashion is often understood to center on apparel choices, fashion can be
recognized as the current style or way of behaving in any field. Thus,
proposals are welcome from divergent fields such as architecture,
anthropology, cultural studies, history, interior design, graphic design,
psychology, sociology, and women’s studies among others.

Announcement: filtering posts to avoid dubious
publishers<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2013/07/15/announcement-filtering-posts-to-avoid-dubious-publishers/>

JULY 15, 2013

I have been made aware of Jeffrey Beall’s excellent
list<http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/> of
“potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access
publishers.” As the number of obvious fly-by-night publishers increases
(exponentially, these days, it seems) so too does the risk that academics
will end up with a weakened publication record if they fall for this scam.

So I will be checking publishers associated with CFPs that I might post
here against Beall’s list. If the publisher is on the list, the CFP will
not be posted here. I would encourage all my co-authors and readers to
keep an eye out. No one’s perfect, and something might get past me. If
you notice something weird in any of the CFPs posted (with respect to
Beall’s list), please let me know by email and I will investigate.
