Dear all,
I came today upon a string of articles that touch recent debates on the
list.
You can find them on the following URLs, ordered chronologically:
Timo de Rijk: "This Mine Sweeper is Life-Threatening" (In dutch NRC
handlesblad, feb 2013)
http://tekst123.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/20130212-NRC.nl-Deze-design-mijnenveger-is-levensgevaarlijk.pdf
Timo is criticizing the design produces in Netherland's artistic
academies stating that design must prove itself in reality, which
demands that designers solve problems (or the illusion of
problems) with well-functioning products.
This was followed by well constructed answer from Louise Schouwenberg in
Dumos Magazine on June 2013
http://www.designacademy.nl/Portals/0/98-105%20Olandesi.pdf
And finally, unfortunately, the new head of the Design Academy
Eindhoven, Thomas van Widdershoven had to have the final word.
http://www.designacademy.nl/News/tabid/2055/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/2019/Why-is-the-mine-kafon-under-attack.aspx
Reading these articles made me think about the existence o f a large gap
within design disciplines, where on one side we have the established
academics of universities and research centers, and on the other we have
a line of practitioner experts or famed designers in applied art and
design schools and academies.
The example is very simply put - I am sure that Timo is a bit more aware
of what is design than his article suggests him to be, however I find it
alarming that the reaction of the head of one of the most prestigious
academies in Europe cites Jealousy and Pentagon conspiracy as the reason
behind a critic's words. More over when the issue of Evidence is an
ongoing larger debate between some of this lists participants.
Its beyond my knowledge, yet I wonder if the academic design field
interacts with the field of applied art and design schools/academies,
or do both sides look down on one another.
