Teena,
One can make a good argument that what we do for students who don't become designers is the important test of design education. I'd argue that art and, to an even greater extent, design teaches a way of thinking that is fading from our prefab society and is very important. I know it's fashionable in design education circles to claim that it's not about making stuff and not about objects but thinking through making is very important and making stuff is the only way I know how to do that.
I guess I'm marginalizing myself with the design-as-academic/intellectual-activty crowd and the professionalists both.
