Dear Dr Mark Evans
1. How do you develop capability in design thinking?
Design thinking is an innate human ability which can be accentuated an made refined wit use and can be introduced at an early age or through focussed education.
2. How do you know when someone does or does not have capability as a design thinker?
All of us have different degrees of competence and we ca work to change that through motivation, practice and mentoring.
3. Is design thinking a purely innate and intuitive capacity that you have or do not have?*
Man professional designers as well as artists would like to keep this as a mystery but I believe that it can be a learned capability if t environment is conducive and the individual s sufficiently motivated and be willing to work in groups in a multidisciplinary setting.
4. Is design thinking something that can be taught, developed and even assessed?
Yes, all of his and we have ben doing this for the past three decades wit considerable success in a design school setting and now I am embarked on taking i to several Universities in India and we are confident of success here.
5. Can we legitimately say it is unique to the field and can we prove it by being able to specify and isolate what it is as well as being able to articulate a specific pedagogical approach for its development?*
Proof we should leave to the scientists. It is not unique to an one field n ca be applied across sectors and disciplines.
These are m personal views after teaching Deign Thinking for over 35 years now at NID Ahmedabad and now we are introducing it at Ahmedabad University an CEPT University i Ahmedabad city as well as in Ambedkar University in Delhi besides a number o design schools across India.
I have so far posted about 20 paper on Design Thinking on my Academia.edu we archive as well as numerous case studies and reflections on m blogs listed below m signature.
We have started a group o design activists here in India called www.visionfirst.in and here we have been advocating that design and design thinking should be used by the Government of India for focussing the new educational institutes on issues of design for god governance and all areas of public god and not just a a tool for business an industry.
With warm regards

In fact, to help me get my head around the issue I have had to recruit a PhD student and would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the List (academics and practitioners) who have been very gracious in responding to his requests for interviews. The responses collated to date indicate both consensus and conflict.
