Rolling the ball a little bit further...
To make things more concrete in organizational design, there are also other instruments available than drawing as for example the Lego “serious play” concept and process developed by Johan Roos en Bart Victor in the mid-1990s as way to enable managers to describe, create and challenge their views of their business.
And to join the remarks on the list of a few hours ago of GK and Ranjan on design thinking in business in the context of organizational change:
I am just finishing my PhD (hope to defend it coming November at the University of Groningen (NL)) in the field of Design, Management and Complexity Science, reflecting on two cases I was involved with as an organizational designer some ten years ago and in both cases (one business, one policy) sustainable change was realised using insights from complexity science. In my PhD I present the method we developed and evaluate it on its effectiveness.
The title of my PhD-study: 'Imagineering the Butterfly Effect: Complexity and Collective Creativity in Business and Policy - Designing for Organizational Emergence'
By the way, we teach this material already for seven years at the Imagineering Academy at NHTV Breda, the Netherlands as wel to executives as regular master students who finished a commercial or political bachelor. Always interested in connecting with comparable programs.
Hope this helps,
Diane

Great Question!
David Sibbet's work at the Grove is really worth a look - they have a few
training style materials that might be useful for this
http://www.grove.com/site/index.html
there's been recent interest in this in the ux profession too - as Lilly's
post points out.
practitioner books like the recent Sketchnote Handbook
http://rohdesign.com/book/ pul together a lot of good ideas and tips in a
concise how-to fashion
I've heard great things about Dave Gray's workshops on this topic too
(drawing for the non-drawing set) so maybe one way to kickstart this kind
of practice is to get someone out to train your trainers..?
lots of it points back to the grove though.. :) and, of course, visual
maestros like Bill Verplank!
…and - to keep the ball rolling: maybe the thing you're trying to teach
isn't really visualisation, it's visual thinking…?
hope this helps!
cheers
jy
