Municipal Engineer is planning a themed issue on
Accessibility and infrastructure: developments in transport.
Themed issue editor: Richard Pearson, Director of Highways, Department of Infrastructure, Isle of Man, UK
The deadline for abstracts is 16 October 2013. The deadline for submissions is 17 January 2014.
The UK Disability Discrimination Act 1995 set the scene by requiring organisations to ensure that their services are accessible to all.
Subsequent legislation and best practice has evolved to encompass, arguably, ‘places for people’ thinking and pedestrian modelling to plan the built environment. It has also progressed to include the interface between public
spaces such as the public highway, parks, buildings and services thereby creating a seamless user environment that is fit-for-purpose-for-all, supports economic success, facilitates regeneration and ultimately improves quality of life.
Best practice considers the wider issues of spatial planning, strategic routing, capacity, landscaping and vistas whilst also paying close attention to details such as widths, levels, gradients, materials and transition points.
The underlying principle of promoting the best possible quality of life for everyone is an exemplary objective and worthy of consideration but that objective must complement the need for economic success and ensuring that
infrastructure projects realise the maximum possible benefit in the lives of the people they serve.
This themed issue of Municipal Engineer will explore best practice in the area of accessibility and infrastructure.
Topics to address could include:
- Bus accessibility
- Station and train access
- Pedestrian-crossing points
- Making cycling more accessible
- Building design
- Design and layout considerations in public spaces
- Spatial planning
- Route planning
- Pedestrian modelling
