The Design Research Society’s 2014 conference invites you to engage in
discussions and debates on the future directions of design and design
research. We welcome you to join us in Umeå, Sweden, 16-19 June 2014.

We believe there is a shared discourse in design, one that includes all
areas of design research, and that is of vital importance for our
understanding and development of the foundations of design. This discourse
is something we share and cultivate over long periods of time, as it tells
stories of past, present and future trajectories of design and its role in
society.

13th Participatory Design Conf (Oct 2014,
Namibia)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2013/06/07/13th-participatory-design-conf-oct-2014-namibia/>

JUNE 7, 2013

Dates: 6-10 October 2014
Location: Windhoek, Namibia

Deadline for submissions: 28 February 2014

Upon literally having embraced new territories of participation at the PDC
2012, with the decision to host the PDC 2014 on the African continent, for
the first time in history, we will now engage with the theme of:

“Reflecting connectedness”

Although ‘Participatory Design’ as such has not been a prevalent term in
Africa, ‘Participation’ however is a familiar concept in Africans’ every
day activities and deeply anchored in the Southern African philosophy of
UBUNTU, recognising principles of relationships between people. Besides,
societies all over the world have acknowledged profound links between
people and their environment for many centuries. Moreover we are currently
experiencing a technologically pushed trend in ‘being always connected’.
This is manifested in a number of designed artefacts, such as smart-phones,
social networks, computer supported cooperative and distributed working
tools.

By ‘reflecting connectedness’ in participatory design, we acknowledge
influential relations across continents, societies, people, disciplines and
time, beyond the direct involvement of stakeholders. We recognise the value
of accumulated experiences elsewhere and over time to enrich the field of
Participatory Design. We further engage in critical debates of what it
means to design within and for a multilayered network, such as the on-line
world versus off-line interactions, the blurring distinction of designers
and users, researchers and artists, design and research ‘in the wild’,
designing for social justice, inclusiveness, and sustainability.

The 2014 PDC will be a platform to connect ‘in person’ with designers,
researchers, artists, practitioners and other related people, to engage in
fruitful dialogues, to participate in numerous activities such as
tutorials, workshops, doctorial consortiums, participatory art encounters,
paper presentations as well as game viewing and exquisite dinning.

All in all you are looking forward to an unforgettable conference
experience with many new insights and connections.

to be announced later)
Location: Conference 1: London – Conference 2: Los Angeles

Deadline for submission of abstracts/proposals: 15 September 2013

THE MEDIATED CITY conference offers a platform for multiple and diverse
examinations of the city. It aims to bring people together from diverse
backgrounds and fragment, multiply and reconfigure our readings of the
city; to offer multiple and conflicting discipline perspectives. The
intention is to share views of the city as physical entity, online
community, film set, photographic backdrop, geographical map, sociological
case study, political metaphor, digital or video game etc…. – to examine it
as a mediated and shared phenomenon.

*This is a unique free event.*
A day of discussion about proactive, reactive, reflective design
methods and practices.

*Different types of research are fundamental to design.
*New forms of common empathy help us create a platform to question and
act on the challenges we face in the future. When deployed wisely design
and architecture can bring us pleasure, choice, strength, decency and
much more, but if abused, the outcome can be wasteful, confusing,
humiliating and dangerous.

None of us can avoid being affected by design, whether or not we wish to.
It is so ubiquitous that it determines how we feel and what we do, often
without our noticing.

Our world is changing and how we educate for that world is changing too,
this day event will weave some threads of how we might tackle, understand
and reflect on these changes.

Deadline for submissions: 9 December 2013

The forthcoming DESIGN 2014 Conference will continue to be a great
event founded on tradition and excellence. We live in a networked
world communicating and exchanging ideas by emails, virtual meetings and
social networks. Opportunity to meet colleagues face-to-face, to exchange
and share new ideas in implausible discussions, to build a personal network
in a direct contact is the invaluable opportunity of DESIGN conference. We
invite high-quality submissions for DESIGN 2014 covering
substantial, original and previously unpublished research. Applied,
theoretical and results-oriented papers from both academia and industry,
based on thorough analysis or argumentation, will be considered for the
conference programme. Submissions should fit into one of proposed
conference topics. Submission instructions will be available from June 15th
2013 on the DESIGN conference web portal: www.designconference.org.
