medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Meg,
I would certainly use "lessons" for the first. But what is the Latin (?) for the second expression? What about "observing" the hours?

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
I'm in the process of translating a text which refers to feasts by the number of lections.
Would the preferred English version refer to "readings" or "lessons"?
Also, I have been referring rather loosely to people "attending" or "listening to" the canonical hours (or sometimes just "hours", omitting "canonical.") One person who looked at my text wants me to expand slightly and say "recitation" or "chanting" of the hours. Is this necessary / desirable? What do you think?
Meg
