Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland - the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki - Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 including 350 professors.
The former Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering have merged to form the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The new school combines design, media, architecture, film, art education and art. The current key areas of research in the school are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, well-being architecture and emerging technologies, and urban planning and design.
Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture invites applications for:
TENURE TRACK OR TENURED POSITION IN NEW MEDIA which can be filled on any level from Assistant Professor to tenured Professor
On the basis of their experience and competence, applicants will be placed at one of the four levels of the tenure track system: Assistant Professor (first-term), Assistant Professor (second-term), Associate Professor, and (Full) Professor.
Job description
The Professor of New Media is expected to contribute strongly to the strategic development of the Department of Media's academic operations with the aim of maintaining and increasing its international reputation and ensuring its relevance to the expanding Finnish new media creative sector, as well as to the needs of, for example, cultural institutions that have a desire and potential to exploit its benefits and innovations.
The tasks of the Professor of New Media include teaching and research in the field as well as development and administrative work in the Department of Media. The department's Media Lab has, during the last 20 years, been a pioneer of education and research in the field of new media and many of its graduates have had a significant influence on the development of the Finnish new media sector, within its commercial, cultural and research contexts.
We seek applicants capable and experienced in research and development activities that exploit and integrate 'new media' technology with the creation of tools, systems and productions characterized by their cultural value/significance and the illumination of knowledge. The underlying context for the position is in innovative media concepts, design and experimental production of 'new media', and is directly related to the academic operations of the Department of Media's Media Lab.

The Department of Media is an academic community of approximately 500 students and 80 staff members created through a restructuring of the School of Art and Design in January 2010. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The study programmes and research of the department are organized within three units: the Media Lab, Graphic Design and Photography. The department offers the highest level of education in its various fields in Finland
and within its research efforts strives to be at the forefront of knowledge through academic and artistic research conducted within the department and its doctoral programmes, as well as through group-based collaborative and inter-disciplinary research carried out in consortia and international contexts. The department is highly international and multi-disciplinary in nature and its work is characterized by educational approaches that are collaborative, practice-based, open, and in which creativity and innovation are highly valued.
Requirements
Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of
their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.
We seek an individual who is able to create fruitful collaborations within the department, with other units of the inter-disciplinary academic community of Aalto University, with other Finnish universities and institutions, as well as with international partners.
Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree and/or distinguished artistic merits, and proven ability as artist/designer/producer within multi-disciplinary research and development work. The review of candidates is based on their research and/or artistic practice, teaching experience, academic leadership and other activity in scientific and professional communities.
Knowledge and engagement with contemporary creative practices of other fields of arts and design would be an advantage. Similarly experience and interaction with related technical fields, social and cultural phenomena are appreciated.
Salary
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also propose salary requirements.

*    List of publications (with 10 most significant publications highlighted)
*    1-2 page summary of teaching merits
*    A brief description (max 3 pages) of your views regarding the field and what you want to do if appointed
