medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
I´m finishing up a short study of the cult of St. Blaise in Iceland, and have two queries. I´ve just run across the possibility that in Latin his name might be spelled 'Basilius' instead of 'Blasius'. How would I find out (since most modern work is going to normalize!) when and where the ´Basilius' spelling might be found? (I think I have one example, which I had thought was St. Basil!)
Question two I think I´ve asked before, but there may be different people on the list now. I understand that the standard iconography is crossed candles, but I´m wondering if he is ever depicted with animals, especially sheep, so that a statue of him could be confused (by a protestant) with one of John the Baptist.
Thanks,
Meg
