You might find some of my remarks about "Letness" useful in this context. This predates Kress by a few years, and is much further developed than Kress's recent 'discovery'.

Basically, the argument runs that the process of making something stand for another is fundamental. 'Let x stand for y' is logically preceded by 'let' and 'stand for', hence "letness"
> Letness we may take to be the central metaphysical necessity of the semiotic point of view.
This further suggests that there are many human activities that precede our invention and design of language, however broadly defined; basic wayfinding, hunting, gathering and dancing among others.
