Call for Papers: Renaissance Society of America

“Music and the Soul in Renaissance Learning”
Although almost everyone is familiar with theories about the relationship
between music and the soul (Affektenlehre) in the Baroque period, scholars
have paid comparatively little attention to their role in Renaissance music
and thought. Yet this is when the revival of interest for ancient theories
about this subject began. This panel will engage with the way Renaissance
culture understood the relationship between music and the soul. Many
philosophers and humanists writing about music found themselves entangled
in the Plato-Aristotle controversy: they had to make a choice between two
radically contrastive theories of the constitution of the soul: a Platonic
one which was responsible for the idea that music has the power to shape
and condition the human soul, and an Aristotelian one which did not
postulate any special relationship between music and soul. The panel will
focus on the efforts of Renaissance philosophers and humanists to explore
the legacies handed down to them from ancient philosophical and musical
theoretical texts, and the difficult reconciliations this required between
the authority of the ancient musical world and the demands of a developing
new musical culture.
