With 175 years of history to look back on, the University of Westminster has a few stories to tell. As part of the University’s 175th anniversary celebrations, an Oral History website has just been launched.
The University of Westminster Archive has been running an Oral History Project since 2010 recording memories of the Regent Street Polytechnic and Polytechnic of Central London. We now have a collection of 50 interviews, which can be listened to by appointment in our reading room. 70 excerpts from these interviews are now available online, bringing to life the University’s past through the memories of alumni and staff members.
The University has undergone many significant changes in its lifetime from the days of the Regent Street Polytechnic when people took courses in mainly vocational subjects, to the politically charged days of the Polytechnic of Central London when student protests were commonplace. The collection includes interviews with Polytechnic Secondary School boys who studied here in the 1930s and 1940s (including those evacuated during World War Two), as well as members of clubs, alumni and University staff.
The project is on-going and we are always looking for new participants. Contact the University of Westminster Archive for more information via email [log in to unmask] or by phone 020 350 69602.
