Jane
In Nottinghamshire we took a robust view a few year ago to abandon paper overdue notices, and move to electronic methods of communication. We now send out emails, text messages and automated phone messages based on loan data from our LMS.
I had a quick look at figures this week as an entirely typical sample and we sent out:
Mon 30 April
email
items = 2825
users = 709
phone (voicemail)
items = 2458
users = 335
text message
items = 3823
users = 568
Tue 1 May
email
items = 494
users = 140
phone (voicemail)
items = 1761
users = 284
text message
items = 2750
users = 498
We offer customers a choice of all three (we prefer email as it costs us nothing) or they can opt for no communication at all. I am quite surprised having looked at these stats at the number opting for text, which has grown a lot in the past year or so.
Best wishes
Nick

Subject: Proving the Business Case For Texting in Libraries
Hi,
We are a very small library service investigating the introduction of email & text notifications.
We have evidence in the form of letters and comments from customers that they would prefer to receive electronic messages but our Authority would like us to establish the number of customers who would actually use the service if it were implemented. i.e. would the use justify the implementation and maintenance costs.
First thoughts are:
Canvas opinion via social media channnels and Council web site
Quick questionnaire in libraries
Does anyone have any tips on how we can obtain this type of evidence to include in our business plan?
Thanks in advance.
