Dear Colleagues,
As noted earlier, I have now upload the longer version of my Theory Construction article to the Academia.edu web site. You will find it at:
http://swinburne.academia.edu/KenFriedman
It appears directly beneath the journal version, under the title:
"Theory Construction. DRS Conference Version."
While this version does not offer a demonstration of how to generate theory in the situated context of practice, it does offer examples of how to build theory, including a particularly useful excerpt from the article "How to Build an Economic Model in Your Spare Time" by Hal Varian, Chief Economist at Google and Professor Emeritus of Economics and of Information at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was Founding Dean of the School of Information.
Even if you do not want to take the time to read the longer version, you will find the deeper bibliography especially helpful with respect to theory construction in design and design research.
