Dear Chuck,
Hmmmmmmm … Well, you might be right that the paper I recall was Helsinki and not Brunel. Perhaps I am becoming a grumpy old professor with the emphasis on old.
One of the members of the doctoral committee that awarded my PhD spoke, read, and wrote 65 languages, over a dozen of them fluently. Even more impressive, the fluent languages came from several major groups – Anglic, Germanic, Scandinavian, Finno-Ugric, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Slavic, and Semitic. The only trouble was listening to him. His accent was so thick that no one could understand him in any language other than Czech when he spoke – though everyone praised the perfection of his prose when he wrote. I’m starting to feel that way about my memory.
Either that, or it’s my Maurice Chevalier moment

Perhaps you might allow for multiple readings. When you say that something is so, that is a truth claim. When you write that neuroscience or cognitive science demonstrate something, that seems to me a truth claim. The same with Miller – you used Miller to support your claim, Miller is an authority, so it stands to reason that my reference asks whether Miller said this. I spend my time thinking these kinds of things through in a systematic way.
I’ll read the paper again next week with respect to the assumptions.
Perhaps those who have also read the paper would venture their thoughts.
Yours,
Ken
