I haven't heard it from anyone younger than the WWII generation but erstwhile enlisted men in the US Army who had recently become officers used to alter their uniform shirts by making epaulettes from the part that would be hidden by uniform pants. Thus second lieutenants were called "shave tails."

Second lieutenants are a passionate bunch. It has something to do with newly acquired gold bars and high mortality rates.
