Dear David,
Yikes! We disagree in your assessment of Jakob Nielsen. You have the right to have an opinion on the matter, and this is an opinion – a sweeping generalisation at that.
I’m not disagreeing with the quality of your own research. In my view, your book on writing about medicines for people is first-rate, and I think every library needs a copy.
But Jakob Nielsen deserves his reputation as a leader in our field. I hold him in high regard, and the evidence suggests that the NN/g reports and books are of great value. Then there are those 79 patents …
Surely some analysis lies behind the kind of sweeping claim you’ve made. I’d want to know why you believe that Nielsen “has a lot of catching up to do” before I change my views. In my view, Jakob Nielsen is a researcher whose firm and partners have established the leading edge in our field.
Since the Communication Research Institute of Australia and the Nielsen Norman Group both maintain content-rich websites, people can visit both to review and think for themselves. Your positions differ. The kinds of material you post make that clear. So does your blog – you tend to reflect on social philosophical issues, where Nielsen tends to address specific topics in research and usability.
As much as I admire Writing About Medicines for People, I’m not ready to say that your approach is superior to Jakob Nielsen’s.
I’m happy to let folks read for themselves and think on the differences.

I remember reading Jakob Nielsen’s book on usability engineering when it first came out in 1993.
At the time I thought that he had a long way to go both conceptually and empirically to catch up with the leading edge of what has come to be incorrectly called ‘design research’ but would be more appropriately called design pathology.
I have followed his pronouncements since then, including the latest. I still think he has a lot of catching up to do.
