Dear Mauricio,
Thanks for your note. You’ve asked several profound questions in one short paragraph. There are two answers. One is short. The other is long.
The short answer is that Jakob Nielsen’s article on the “Strength of User Evidence” has within it a fair amount of information that addresses the issues you raise.
For those who missed the earlier note, it is available at:
http://www.nngroup.com/articles/ux-evidence/
The long answer will take some careful thinking and writing – I’ll see if I can organize my thoughts over the weekend for a reply.
Jakob Nielsen is not simply proposing rules of thumb. He offers evidence-based heuristics. Nielsen Norman Group is no ordinary design group – this is one of the premiere research-driven organizations in the field. Dr. Nielsen does not suggest that you approach these issues through guess-work. His methods also yield high-quality peer-reviewed articles as well as patents and effective client services. The heuristic approach emerges from decades of skilled experience, first-rate research, and evidence-based practice.
Next week, I’ll return to offer my long answer to a very deep question – in the meantime, you’ll find some answers by using the links in the article and browsing the NN/g site.
Yours,
Ken

I see how Nielsen’s recommendations are valuable in clinical design research and design practice. What do you think about applied design research that we are more likely to conduct in academia? My own answer is that we still need big ‘N’ and small ‘p’ in academia to able to report findings as research evidence; however, Nielsen is pointing out the weaknesses of research evidence when used in practice. I have also wondered how design researchers could be more efficient conducting research. A study with big sample size needs a lot of funding and findings usually have a low return of investment (reduced application in practice).
