Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland - the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki - Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 including 350 professors.
The former Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering have merged to form the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The new school combines design, media, architecture, film, art education and art. The key areas of research in the school are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, well-being architecture and emerging technologies, and urban planning and design.

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture invites applications for:

PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN

The position will be filled on the basis of artistic merits and the successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will begin during the academic year 2013-14.

Aalto Professor of Practice system is intended especially for the fields of art, design and architecture but can be applied to other fields as well. The Professor of Practice position provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals for opening new areas of teaching and research/ artistic and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of a field.
Professors of Practice are expected to exercise and guide scientific research and/or artistic activity, to provide education based on it, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.
The position is located at the Department of Media, see http://media.aalto.fi/en/. The Department of Media is an academic community of approximately 500 students and 80 staff members created through a restructuring of the School of Art and Design in January 2010. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The study programmes and research of the department are organized within three units; the Media Lab, Graphic Design and Photography.
Job description

The role of graphic designers has swiftly changed from producing static visual representations to collaborating in dynamic, interactive and iterative projects. The designers need visual and artistic sensibility, but also awareness of the digital production methods as well as openness to a multidisciplinary approach.


The Graphic Design unit is looking for a professor with a strong professional portfolio in graphic/communication design and experience of teaching in higher education.


The new professor has a broad understanding of the value of design today in society and in culture, as well as in business and entrepreneurship. The new professor is familiar with contemporary design discourse and fosters critical thinking. The new professor has a vision for guiding the study programs in graphic design within the Department of Media, where close contacts and cooperation between the various units is beneficial. The main focus of the professor will be in the MA program.



Requirements

Professor of Practice is considered a professor position with Aalto-level requirements and external evaluation. Artistic merits will be emphasized in the selection process: the applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications that are comparable to a doctoral degree, good knowledge of theories of graphic design and wide practical experience in the field. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, research, co-operative skills, and activity and leadership in artistic or academic community.


Salary

Aalto University follows the salary system of universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

-          an artistic portfolio (including a list of work and 5-10 work samples, PDF format), size max 20MB
-          one page summary of teaching merits,
-          a possible list of publications (the most important ones to be marked with an asterisk), and
-          a brief description (max 3 pages) of your views regarding the present situation and the future development of the field

All material should be submitted in English. The application material will not be returned.
The departmental committee reserves the right to ask additional material from the applicants.

The applications for this position are to be addressed to the Dean of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and submitted to the Registry of Aalto University preferably by e-mail to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>  no later than on May 22nd 2013.
