medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Revd Gordon Plumb <[log in to unmask]>
> You obviously have a lot of ground to make up about the C of E
i should hope so, Gordon.
after all, one does so need a good Hobby, in one's Golden Years.
>- it is a very broad church and, yes, does include some moral relativists.
well, that's the kind of thing that you can expect to Come to Pass, when one
looses one's Empire.
>I will not comment on George II being a mass-murderer - out of my period!
not *that* Geo. II, you Silly Dffer, *OUR* Geo. II --G.W.B., Duhbya.
not my period either, but i seem to recall that your Geo. II was a relatively
harmless old Codger who hardly harmed anyone, save for a few million Fuzzy
Wuzzies out on the fringe of the Empire --and a few million Africans with
itchy feet for the New World.
> But this can be said to his credit, that he gave the Royal Library to the
British Museum,
Duhbya did *that*?
i had no idea.
i didn't even know the little bugger could read.
have to revise my thinking about him, perhaps.
> Yes, Oxford do all too rarely publish
that Mad Man Shipper did that.
you Brits and your ridiculous concept of "plural nouns"
>a reasonably-priced paperback; but occasionally the oddest things happen -
I think I recall you being sweet reasonableness with someone else's arguments
once rather than adopting your usual cantankerous pose!!!
Mea Culpa, maybe, but not my fault.
you people have Hit a Nerve.
"reasonably-priced" indeed.
of course, in my 25 years as a (used) book dealer, i was never above (or
below, depending on one's point of view) picking up the odd Academical volume
at a jumble sale for $1 and selling it to, say, a Fish at the Kalamazoo
conference for $30 or $40 --but that was still below half the retail
publisher's price, so it wasn't Gouging, just Good Bidness.
c
p.s. if you ever accuse me of possessing "sweet reasonableness" again in a
public space i may have to Sue.
not a very Christian thing to do, Gordon, even for a Moral Relativist.
Repent.
