medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Herwig Weigl <[log in to unmask]>
> is there sufficient textual evidence for "deacon" instead of "dean", as
the PL has it repeatedly?
nice Catch, Herwig!
>a certain Erlebald, "deacon of Cambrai"

[the Googlistas, in their crafty Wisdom, have removed the page numbers, so
one
has to do a search on "Erlebald" to find the passage in the translation.]
this is the new translation by Joseph Mcalhany and Jay Rubenstein (i believe
that Mcalhany was actually responsible for the major work of the translation,
Rubenstein for the notes), and i find their version of the Monodies much
superior to that of John Benton's 1970, "Self and Society in Medieval France:
The Memoirs of Abbot Guibert of Nogent." (other opinions on that would be
welcome).
though i believe i have caught Mcalhany/Rubenstein in at least one
significant
error (in the Monodies --so this one would make two, unless the new edition
which M. & R. are following does, indeed, read "diaconus").
>Is the translation based on a new critical edition?
yes.
a note in the introduction says that the new translation was done from a new
edition by Huygens

my library has CC 127A,
Trois
textes transmis par le groups de manuscrits BeGG1.
but not the CC "127," which contains the new De sanctis et eorum pigneribus
--so i can't check that text. (perhaps someone else can?)
but, as i said, the PL is clear

>In Cameracensi Ecclesia, ante hoc ferme biennium decanus, qui et summus
aedituus templi fuerat, cui Erlebaldus nomen erat, qui in multis quos
circumquaque faciebat ad populum sermonibus, ad fructum verae confessionis
ostendendum....
the PL ed. is a reprint of d'Archery's 1651 ed., and i don't believe that
there was one between those two --or after the PL-- until Huygen's new CC ed.,
which was obviously a bit over due.
could it be a mistake in d'Achery's ed.?
or in the [on-line] PL transcription of d'Achery?
*was* there a "Dean" [decanus] of Cambrai in the early 12th c.?
wasn't Cambrai in the province of Reims (before it became a province itself)?
it doesn't seem to be in the GC vols. for Reims (IX and X).
