CFP: Contextualising Klaus Böldl / Klaus Böldl im Kontext (Aston University, Birmingham)
Submission deadline: 31 May 2013
Call for Papers
Proposals are invited for the first academic conference devoted to the study of Klaus Böldl’s works, to take place at Aston University, 2 Oct 2013.
The organisers are delighted to announce that the event’s keynote lecture will be delivered by Prof Heinrich Detering (University of Göttingen), President of the German Academy for Language and Literature.
The conference is organised to coincide with Klaus Böldl’s stay at Aston as DAAD Writer in Residence, and will include a bilingual reading by the author.
Since the publication of his highly acclaimed first novel “Studie in Kristallbildung” in 1997, Klaus Böldl’s prose has consistently continued to receive critical praise, and he was recently awarded the Friedrich Hebbel Prize for his achievements. In contrast, academic interest in the works of this fascinating author has to date been relatively slow to develop. This one-day event is intended to close that gap and to stimulate future research by providing an international forum for Böldl-scholars.
The aim of the conference is to interpret Böldl’s works in context, both in terms of exploring his participation in writing traditions and contemporary literary trends, and with regard to applying approaches from the field of cultural theory to his novels.
Potential topics include but are not limited to:
- identity and alterity
- regional identity and “Heimat”
- images and imagology
- spaciality and liminality
- utopias and heterotopias
- the realist tradition (incl. magical realism)
- intertextuality (particularly with regard to Stifter)
- comparative studies linking Böldl to other contemporary authors
The proceedings from the conference will be published, and this collection of papers will form the first volume of research dedicated to this inspiring author.
Please send abstracts (in English or German) of no more than 250 words to the organisers Dr Claudia Gremler ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and Dr Uwe Schütte ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by 31 May 2013.
Call for Papers
- Realismus (einschl. Magischer Realismus)
